    Overview

Horizons is Alpha Omega's print spiral curriculum, primarily known for math (Horizons Math is well-regarded among Christian classical families) but also language arts and other subjects. The K-6 math sequence is colorful, briskly paced, and slightly more advanced than typical grade-level expectations. The spiral approach means concepts return repeatedly. Kids who learn well from spaced repetition thrive; kids who need to drill a single topic to mastery may need a different program. Sold as either individual subjects or complete packages.

    Strengths

    • •Colorful and visually appealing: one of the most kid-friendly math workbook designs on market
    • •spiral approach effective at retention (review baked in throughout)
    • •children consistently test ahead of peers after using Horizons
    • •reasonably priced for what you get
    • •transitions well to Saxon 5/4 after grade 3

    Limitations

    • •Daily page count high (4-6 workbook pages/day) causing child burnout particularly grades 3-5
    • •Moves fast and doesn't differentiate. Struggling learners left behind because spiral doesn't pause
    • •explanation quality thin in upper grades (teacher manuals lack concept depth)
    • •ends at grade 6 forcing curriculum transition
    • •Christian content embedded throughout
    • •concept gaps reported (topics introduced then moved past before mastery)

    Best fit for

Strong math learners who enjoy colorful visually engaging workbooks; families wanting spiral approach with continuous concept review; children who can handle volume without fatigue; Christian families comfortable with integrated faith content

    The honest read

Consistently praised as one of the most visually appealing and rigorously paced spiral math programs for early elementary. Parents who stay through report strong mathematical fluency. But two friction points: program moves fast without slowing for struggling learners, and daily workload (4-6 pages) is high for young children. Leading to what multiple parents call 'math exhaustion.'
