Activities for Learning · Dr. Joan Cotter · Grades K-8
Families with 1-2 children and consistent daily teaching time wanting deep conceptual number sense; children with dyscalculia, ADHD, or sensory processing differences who need multi-sensory math; math-anxious children who have 'shut down' on traditional programs
$98-220/level + manipulatives
Overview
RightStart Mathematics was developed by Dr. Joan Cotter based on Montessori-influenced research about how children build number sense. The program uses a specific AL Abacus and a card-game system instead of finger counting and rote memorization. Kids visualize quantities in groups of five and learn to manipulate them mentally. Material-heavy and parent-intensive in the early levels; produces unusually strong mental math and number sense. Families who commit to the method consistently report results; families looking for an open-and-go workbook will be frustrated.
Strengths
- •Exceptional long-term number sense outcomes. Mental math fluency years later
- •multi-sensory design (abacus, games, oral response) accessible for diverse learners
- •minimal written work reduces fine motor barriers
- •game-based reinforcement makes math fun
- •strong place-value foundation that outpaces most programs
Limitations
- •15-45 min daily direct instruction is non-negotiable. Cannot be independent work
- •nearly impossible to accelerate
- •Managing 2+ children at different levels described as 'difficult'
- •high upfront cost (~$309 first year)
- •some children overwhelmed by manipulatives
- •abacus dependence concerns parents wanting pencil-paper fluency sooner
Best fit for
Families with 1-2 children and consistent daily teaching time wanting deep conceptual number sense; children with dyscalculia, ADHD, or sensory processing differences who need multi-sensory math; math-anxious children who have 'shut down' on traditional programs
The honest read
One of the most respected early math programs for building genuine number sense. Parents routinely see long-term payoff in strong mental math years after finishing. But the daily parent-teaching requirement (15-45 min direct instruction every day) makes it the most demanding math curriculum in common use. Managing two children at different levels is described as exhausting.
