Secular families wanting Sonlight-quality literature-based learning without religious content; 4-day schedule appeals to busy families
$300-500/year
Overview
BookShark is the secular sibling of Sonlight. Same literature-based DNA, same box-set delivery model, but stripped of religious framing. The 4-day schedule and built-in catch-up day make it one of the most parent-friendly literature programs on the market, with zero teacher prep required once the box arrives. Religious references in historical contexts (the Reformation, ancient Israel) appear as history rather than theology. The main complaint from long-term users is that the upper grades thin out. BookShark hasn't yet extended through high school.
Strengths
- •Secular/faith-neutral literature-based approach
- •modern diverse book selections
- •4-day 36-week schedule with built-in catch-up day
- •zero teacher prep
- •religious references presented in historical context only
Limitations
- •Expensive (normal for literature-based packages)
- •heavy reading load like Sonlight
- •limited upper-grade options
- •no high school track yet
Best fit for
Secular families wanting Sonlight-quality literature-based learning without religious content; 4-day schedule appeals to busy families
The honest read
Fills a critical gap for secular families who love the Sonlight model but not the theology. The 4-day schedule and zero-prep design are the real selling points over DIY literature approaches. Main complaint: wish it extended through high school.
