Overview
All About Spelling is the sister program to All About Reading, applying the same Orton-Gillingham foundations to spelling instruction. Seven levels move from short vowels through advanced Latin and Greek roots, with each new rule explicitly taught and practiced through dictation. Tile-based and multi-sensory like AAR, making it especially strong for dyslexic learners. The program is sequential (placement tests matter) and benefits from parent time at the table. Combined with AAR, it forms one of the most clinically respected literacy stacks available to homeschoolers.
Strengths
- •Teaches the WHY behind spelling (phonics rules, not memorization) producing lasting retention
- •built-in spaced review catches backsliding
- •non-consumable (one purchase covers all children)
- •digital tile app eliminates logistical complaints
- •confidence gains in independent writing most commonly cited outcome
- •works across wide ability range
Limitations
- •Teacher-intensive every single lesson with no off-day option
- •some parents report rules 'not sticking' by Levels 3-4 for auditory-weak kids
- •placement always starts at Level 1 even for older kids
- •not a complete LA program (needs separate reading instruction)

The honest read
Earns remarkably consistent praise as the go-to fix for kids who repeatedly fail traditional memorize-and-test spelling. The one honest complaint: physical tile management is annoying (now largely solved by digital tile app), and every lesson requires daily teacher-led sessions, not independent work.
