Overview
Spelling You See takes a chunk-pattern approach to spelling. Children read a passage daily, mark word patterns with colored pencils, copy the passage, and eventually take dictation of it. Built on research suggesting that spelling is best learned through repeated exposure in context rather than isolated word-list memorization. Levels are book-themed (Bumblebees, Ancient Achievements) and feel more like literature copywork than spelling drill. Loved by families with kids who hated traditional spelling lists; tested at higher grade levels.
Strengths
- •No spelling test stress. Significant emotional benefit for anxious spellers
- •copywork and dictation are short and low-prep
- •color-coded chunking develops pattern recognition for visual learners
- •levels well-sequenced and easy to place
- •semi-independent once routine established
- •gentle, consistent, and sustainable over time
Limitations
- •Progress is hard to see. Parents frequently second-guess the program
- •no phonics rule instruction (exposure-based, not explanatory)
- •children who move fast find same passage for a week tedious
- •NOT recommended for dyslexic learners (use AAS instead)
- •if child is a poor copier the core activity doesn't build intended habit
Best fit for
Strong readers who are mediocre spellers (copywork leverages existing literacy); visual learners who absorb orthographic patterns through exposure; Charlotte Mason families already using copywork/dictation; children who find spelling tests anxiety-inducing; multi-child families needing semi-independent workbook
The honest read
Parent response splits cleanly: parents who love the no-test visual-chunking approach vs parents who feel they have no idea if their child is learning. Progress is real but invisible. Fine for parents who trust developmental processes, intolerable for those needing weekly benchmarks. Distinctly NOT recommended for dyslexic learners.
