Overview
AmblesideOnline is a free Charlotte Mason curriculum covering Year 0 (K) through Year 12, built and maintained by a volunteer Advisory since 2001. It provides detailed 36-week schedules, full booklists, term rotations for artist, composer, folk song, and hymn study, exams, and a large library of digitized original Charlotte Mason writings. The curriculum itself costs nothing; families source the scheduled books from libraries, Project Gutenberg, or used-book purchases, and many spines are public domain. AO also publishes AO for Groups, a version structured for co-ops and cottage schools, and AO-HELP, a minimalist emergency plan. The community's own veterans describe it as far more rigorous than its gentle reputation suggests.
Strengths
- •The most complete free implementation of Charlotte Mason's method available anywhere — 12 full years
- •Detailed weekly schedules: you could realistically start Monday
- •Rigorous booklists that produce genuinely thoughtful readers — upper years widely described as meaty and thought-provoking
- •25 years of continuous volunteer maintenance and an active, deeply knowledgeable support forum
- •Large digitized library of Charlotte Mason's original writings included
- •AO for Groups: a purpose-built version for co-ops and cottage schools (a natural pod fit)
- •Term rotations for artist, composer, folk song, and hymn study build real cultural literacy
Limitations
- •The cost is parental time: daily read-alouds, narration, and schedule-keeping — families regularly report the reading load consuming whole afternoons
- •Books famously run above grade level; children working a 'year behind' is normal and by design
- •Booklists lean heavily on 19th-century British and American texts; some legacy history spines contain racist depictions of Native Americans (This Country of Ours) and anti-Catholic material (Trial and Triumph) — standard community practice is to substitute
- •Christian (Protestant) worldview throughout; Bible is a scheduled subject
- •It's a plan, not a platform — no accounts, no tracking, no automation; the parent is the engine
- •Written narrations alone are widely considered insufficient writing preparation for rigorous high school work
Best fit for
Committed Charlotte Mason families who want the real, undiluted method and are willing to be the engine; rule-followers who thrive executing a detailed plan; pods and co-ops via AO for Groups; families prioritizing depth and beauty over convenience
The honest read
AmblesideOnline is the most serious free curriculum in existence — twelve years of Charlotte Mason education with weekly schedules so detailed you could start Monday. Free means the plan is free; you still source the books, though many are public domain. Be clear-eyed about two things. First, the cost you pay isn't money, it's you: AO runs on a parent who reads aloud daily, leads narration, and holds the schedule. Families regularly report the reading load swallowing whole afternoons, and the books run famously above grade level — kids working a year 'behind' is normal and by design. Second, the booklists lean hard on 19th-century texts, and some carry their era's prejudices; the community's own veterans substitute certain history spines, and we'd suggest you plan to as well. For families who want depth over convenience and are willing to be the engine, nothing else free comes close. For pods, AO publishes a groups version built for co-ops and cottage schools.
